Why You Need It

Not all school districts provide Disability Insurance to their employees, and CTA members aren't always eligible for California's state disability insurance plan. This means you may be left with only sick leave to protect you if you are unable to work due to disability. The CTA-endorsed Disability plans were specially designed to cover the gaps in coverage that many educators and education support professionals face. And because the plans are offered by CTA, you can trust they provide benefits designed with you in mind.

How You Get It

You can apply for coverage at any time by providing satisfactory proof of good health.

To apply you can:

  • Call (800) 522-0406 from 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Pacific Time, Monday-Friday
  • Log in and click here to apply online
  • Log in to download and print a Member Enrollment Booklet and follow the instructions on the enrollment form

In some circumstances, you may be eligible for special enrollment opportunities. These opportunities include:

  • Newly Hired Members
    Newly hired educators and education support professionals who apply for coverage within 180 days of starting work.
  • Members Who Change Districts
    Members who changed school districts and apply within 180 days of starting work have the opportunity to continue their existing coverage or they can apply for Disability Insurance under the new employment opportunity described above.
  • Family Status Change
    Members who apply for coverage within 60 days following the date of a family status change, such as birth/adoption, marriage/domestic partnership, divorce/dissolution, loss of spousal employment, or other qualifying event.

In addition, there may be other opportunities for you to add coverage, including special chapter enrollment campaigns or when transferring coverage from another insurance carrier to The Standard.
